FigCraft as a free Figma alternative

FigCraft is an open-source design tool that follows Figma’s layout: frames, auto layout, components with variants, variables, prototypes and Dev Mode code. It is free, runs as a native app on Windows, macOS and Linux, and has a browser build you can try right now. It is also in alpha, so here is an honest picture of where it stands.

What is FigCraft?

FigCraft is made by the ArtCraft team and published on GitHub as a clean-room reimplementation of the Figma design workflow, written in Rust. Clean-room means it was built from public documentation and observed behaviour, with no Figma code, file formats, icons or images. It isn’t made by Figma, Inc. This site hosts its official browser build, v0.5.1, without changes.

PrototypingConnections, triggers, Smart Animate-style transitions, flows, variables with if / else conditions, and a presentation view with device frames
HandoffMeasurements, ready-for-dev status, annotations, Compare changes, and CSS, HTML, React, SwiftUI and Compose code
Files.figcraft files on your disk; SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF in and out; .fig files open best effort (desktop app)

Every item in Figma’s main menu has a counterpart in FigCraft, and the shortcuts match: F for a frame, R for a rectangle, T for text, Shift+A for auto layout.

What is still missing?

Its developers estimate FigCraft is about half of the way to replacing Figma for real work, and they publish their area-by-area numbers in the project’s roadmap.

FAQ

Is FigCraft really free?

Yes. FigCraft is open source under the MIT or Apache 2.0 licence, with no paid plan, no account and no seat limits. The desktop app and the browser build are both free.

Can I move my Figma files to FigCraft?

Partly. The FigCraft desktop app opens .fig files (from Figma’s File › Save local copy) on a best-effort basis and reads designs exported as Figma REST API JSON. Its developers haven’t checked the importer against real-world files yet, so check what comes through and keep the originals.

Does FigCraft work offline?

The desktop app works fully offline and keeps your files as .figcraft archives on your own disk. The browser build runs on your device too once it has loaded, but it can’t save files yet.

Can my team work in the same file?

In preview. The desktop app can share a file through a server or on the local network with a short join code, and others join from the desktop app or the browser build with live cursors and per-person undo. There are no accounts, teams or comments-in-the-cloud like Figma’s yet.
